The only way to get somewhere, is to start somewhere!

It’s always fun to dream and imagine what we want. But we can’t have or be what we want until we start to show UP for what we want.

And sometimes making a start is the hardest part!

We are all beginners, every time we start something new! And often it’s a scary feeling. Things appear to be so uncertain. We don’t know what’s going to happen, or how things are going to work out. It’s like being the new kid at school all over again.

I was chatting to a friend who was recently appointed CEO of a large international corporate. He admitted to me that even though he was excited to get started, the thought of it was rather terrifying — because he’d never been a CEO before. That made me feel a lot better! Because it doesn’t matter who we are — setting out on a new path can be quite daunting.

But what I’ve learnt is that the best way to get past that gut-wrenching fear is to remind myself of what I want and then to take it one baby step at a time!

When we start with just one small step, we can steer ourselves out of that scary place and back into our creative, emPowered place.

So many of us are afraid to begin, because we fear spectacular failure — losing everything and making fools of ourselves. And sometimes what we want to achieve can seem like such an overwhelming task that we talk ourselves out of it, before we’ve even tried…

But instead of dreading the thought of failure, it’s a lot more helpful to focus on incremental success. You can’t go wrong, if you take it one small step at a time; checking out what works for you, and what doesn’t — and moving purposefully, persistently and joyfully towards what you want.

It is always the right time to start! You can decide to start making one positive change in just one area of your life. And once you’ve decided to move one step closer to what you want, you’ll be encouraged and inspired to take another step…and another…!

And if you keep going and remember to enjoy yourself along the way, you’ll find that all of a sudden you are experiencing everything you’d been dreaming about and you are making your dreams come true!

After repeated ‘start-overs’, what I’ve realised, is that it’s not so much of a ‘start from the beginning’, as it is simply the next chapter of my journey. And the sooner I get started, the less I fear!

Where do You want to go? And what do You want to do?

What’s the one step you can take right now to move you closer towards your dream?
Taking just one baby step today, could be your giant leap for joy! But if you don’t start, how will you ever know?!

Please don’t put your most joyful life on hold. Take your finger off the pause button and press PLAY!

Start by taking it one small step at a time and do what you need to do, to move into your groove and Get Your Glow ON!

With Love,

Create an Inspiring Vision for Your Wonderful Life!

Do you have your own inspiring vision of living your healthiest, happiest, most creatively fulfilling, productive and JOYful Life?

At this time of year there’s a lot of talk about making New Year’s resolutions and setting goals for the coming year.

Instead of setting the same old goals that don’t really inspire us, i.e. “must lose weight”, or “get out of debt”, or “make more money” – it’s a lot more FUN and more compelling to be driven and lead by an inspiring vision for Your Wonderful Life.

Have FUN playing an imagination game.

Visualise YourSelf living happily, healthily, creatively and JOYfully.

What does that look like to You?
What does that feel like?

Imagine it in JOYful detail:

1) What would I LOVE to do?
2) Who would I LOVE to do it with (describe the type of people you’d LOVE to live/work/play with)
3) What would I LOVE to have?
4) What would I LOVE to be?
5) How would I LOVE to express my creativity?
5) How would I LOVE to use my talents and gifts to be of service?

And then begin to put your intention into ACTION.
7) What can I STOP DOING right NOW that will bring me closer to my vision?
8) What can I START DOING right NOW that will bring me closer to my vision?

Have FUN designing the life that You WANT.
And then set your goals to create it.
Be inspired
to live your healthiest, happiest most JOYful Life – because You CAN!

And then set your intention to Rock your Happiness, tune into the Good Stuff and Get Your Glow On!

Get off that couch and MOVE into your Groove! ☺

By the time I’d reached my forties, I had morphed into a chain-smoking, lazy couch-potato who wouldn’t go anywhere unless I could park my car right outside, or even better – inside!
Until - my then-partner had a thrombosis, a close friend had a stroke and another one had a heart attack and gave me the fear!

My partner M and I both gave up smoking, and started walking every evening after work. Nothing like fear to motivate your lazy bum off that couch! ☺

M is 6’4’” tall with extremely long legs, so I had to walk quickly to keep up with him.
After our first outing (which was less than 1km and accompanied by plenty of moaning from me☺), I remember getting home and collapsing exhausted on the couch!

But we kept going every evening, and it did get easier, and surprisingly to me – enjoyable.
We both started looking forward to it every day.

As M got fitter, he was walking much faster, and I was really struggling to keep up with him. I’d start running for a few steps just to keep up the pace.
And I’d see runners going past me and envy them. I wanted to be able to run!
I dreamed about being like those runners in the opening scene of Chariots of Fire – running effortlessly along and enjoying myself ☺

So one day, I decided I’d do it.
I was fit from all the walking and so I thought I’d just take off and go for a run.
I told M I’d see him at the end of the promenade and set off.
I made it as far as the length of four lamp-posts, before I ran out of breath and felt like I was going to throw up and pass out!

But the next day I did it again. Running as far as I could get to, and then slowing down to a walk until I got my breath back and running a little bit more.
In the meantime, M and I had split up, and I moved to a flat right on the beachfront.
I was traumatised by events, and my daily walk/run became therapy and still is.

Being out in the sunshine with crashing waves, flying sea spray and whales and dolphins for company really helps to get my Glow On!
I think of it as my Moving Meditation ☺

After about a year of running/walking I was chatting to a runner friend about my seeming lack of progress. I could only get to a certain point (about 200 metres), before ‘running out of steam’.
He was quite right when he said he thought it may be psychological.

He said that if I could just push past that point, I’d be able to keep going.
Apparently if I was running blind-folded I wouldn’t know where that point was, and I’d run past it.
So I took his advice – and oh boy, what a breakthrough!
I ran my full distance of about 5kms without stopping. I was delighted!
I could now call myself a runner!

Although, admittedly I was still struggling along and running very slowly.
Sometimes it felt like I wasn’t actually moving forward at all – I had to check the landmark next to me to make sure that I was passing it and wasn’t actually running on the spot!

Everyone would overtake me as I slowly jogged along.
One morning I got caught in a World Diabetes Day Fun Run crowd on the beachfront and was overtaken by a one-legged man on crutches!

Once I was overtaken by a really good runner, who steamed full-on up what felt like a 90° hill (but is, in reality, only a slight incline!) - while I struggled, huffing and puffing to the top.
"That was really embarrassing", I said, when I eventually got there.

"I've seen worse than you", he said.
I was delighted! I wasn’t the worst!

Sometimes it felt like my legs just couldn’t carry me on and I’d pretend I had wings on my back and a pair of wings on each heel, to help me ‘fly’ along.
Amazingly enough, this always worked.
I’d feel the extra power I needed to make it all the way.

I also realised that a lot of the runners who came sprinting past me couldn’t sustain their pace – I’d slowly catch up with them and notice they were walking – as I jogged past them and smiled to myself. ☺

It has taken me a few years to build up stamina, and I’ve picked up a bit of speed, but I’m still one of the slowest – and it doesn’t bother me a bit!

Sometimes I bounce along feeling full of vim and vigour; sometimes I sprint as fast as I can for the sheer enjoyment of it -  and sometimes my legs feel like lead and I need to imagine my wings are powering me home.

But the effects of being fit and feeling good are fantastic – and there’s no way I could go back to being a couch-potato now – in fact the very idea horrifies me.

I love knowing that I’m fit and that I CAN run. I’ve enjoyed running alone at dawn in the African bush alongside warthogs and wildebeest, and I’ve dashed right across London in the rain (smartly dressed and made-up for a posh lunch!) when there was a snarl-up with the Tube and the traffic was impossible.

Of course you’re going to think you ‘hate exercise’ if you’re totally unfit – because it feels like hard work! Admittedly, It’s not much fun when you’re huffing and puffing and out of breath.
But once you’ve got over your phobia and built up your fitness, it’ll feel like the most natural and uplifting thing in the world – because your body is designed to move.

And not only will You start enjoying it – you’ll actually want to do it because it makes you feel so good!
Feeling good is addictive –  and you’ll find that once you start, you’ll want to do more of the things that make you feel good!

Here’s to rocking our fitness, enJOYing our healthiest, happiest lives and Getting our Glow On! ☺

Patiently Allowing the Good Stuff to Flow :)

“Patience is the companion of wisdom.” ~ Saint Augustine
I always thought that patience was something that I would sort of magically acquire when I ‘grew up’.
But I grew older, and patience never ‘happened’ ;)
I’ve always been a ‘quick’ person – I think quickly, I walk quickly, I talk quickly, I move quickly (my fingers are flying over the keyboard as I type this!), I’m always moving, I’m always in a hurry, and I’m naturally impatient  :)
So sitting still and having patience is something I’ve had to learn :)
"The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg -  not by smashing it." ~ Arnold Glasow
The thing is, it’s not so much that one learns patience, it’s more that one learns to ‘be patient’, because it’s the only way stuff happens properly – it’s the natural order of things.
Life unfolds as it does :)
"No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer you that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen." ~ Epictetus
We all want things “Now Now NOW!” but it’s often our own impatience that undermines our success and sabotages our happiness :(
Things may not always happen in the time that we (mostly unrealistically) expect, but everything is always happening perfectly, in its right time :)
And the best thing we can do is to put our faith into action and then Get Out of our own way!

When we’re fretting and stressing about ‘why things aren’t happening!’, we start forcing and insisting and creating more resistance, which isn’t helpful.
We don’t make our most inspired choices when we’re stressed, and often we just mess everything up when we’re in a hurry!
'The biggest pitfall as you make your way through your life is impatience.' ~ Susan Jeffers
We’ll throw up our hands and say “Ok, that’s it! It’s just not going to happen”, when we’ve barely given ourselves a chance. We give up on all our efforts and we give up on what we really want, and then move onto the ‘next best thing’.
But we can’t expect our gardens to grow and blossom, when we keep digging up the seeds!
Adopt the pace of Nature;
her secret is patience.
~
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Since I’ve learned to become still (through meditation, and awareness), I’m a lot more patient than I was, and I’m consciously aware when I find myself slipping into impatience and anxiety. I’m approaching everything a lot more patiently these day, and it’s paying off :)
I don’t put myself under the same amount of pressure that I used to, and I don’t allow anyone else to put pressure on me either :)

I know that I'm exactly where I'm meant to be, and everything is unfolding in its perfect time :) And so it is :)

Here's to Rocking Your Wonderful Life with patience :) Allow the Good Stuff to unfold and flow and Get Your Glow On! :)

Give Up? Never! :) GloWomen Share what Inspires them to Keep Going:

When we choose to follow our dreams there will always be challenging times, when we feel overwhelmed and start questioning our abilities and ourselves as to whether it's ‘really worth it’.

But there’s no doubt that persistence pays off. The only way to have, do, create and be what we want is to believe in ourselves, believe in our dreams and to keep going, diligently and courageously :)

Below, some of our inspiring GloWomen share what has inspired them to keep going as they’ve pursued their dreams:

Natasha Nay Avidan: Founding Fellow and Head of Partnerships, Sponsors and Communications at Afriversity, an organisation providing training, funding and incubation for promising African entrepreneurs.
  • Have you ever felt like giving up on your dreams?
“Yes, but it has been a long time since I have thought that way. Sometimes life can throw challenges at us and everything feels hard causing us to slip into a fearful state of mind. Fear is what stops us from following our dreams. We give up because we are afraid, afraid of failure.”
  • What or who has inspired or encouraged you to keep going?
"The first thing I did was change my environment and started surrounding myself with people and projects that inspired me. I was creating my "tribe". A tribe of people that encouraged me, supported me and allowed me to grow and be myself. During this journey, I encountered people that strengthened my faith that I had taken the right path - people that inspire me with their stories, determination and altruism. Individuals that have shown me that despite taking the path less travelled, the rewards are far greater. I take all these experiences and when I have a "rainy day", I bring them to the forefront of my consciousness and re-energise my perseverance and purpose."

Shauna Bruce-Hamburger: Life-coach, teacher, inspirational speaker and author of Beyond Adversity: Into Freedom. Shauna has faced many of her own challenges in living a life with Spina Bifida and helps others overcome their obstacles to live their most fulfilling lives.

"Yes - I have wanted to give up on my dreams or certain aspects of my business before - especially when I have not known what else to do to make something in my business be more successful.

What has always inspired me to keep going - whether it be in life or business, is remembering that I am here for a purpose.  Reconnecting with my life's purpose - and the knowing that I am here with a purpose that only I can accomplish in the way that I can accomplish it - has always kept me moving forward.  This has been true in every aspect of my life whether it be in living with spina bifida, my business or other aspects of my life.  When we know we are on this earth for a reason and we have things we were created to accomplish - that knowing can spur us on to do the great things we were meant to do - even in the midst of obstacles and challenges.  It has always been my strong sense of purpose that has been the driving force for everything in my life - even when I am in the midst of a struggle."

"Nope, giving up has never been an option. I have had my days when I get a bit sick of everything I'm doing, but I have always been able to see the bigger picture. As bad as things can get, giving up would be so much worse.

Thinking about my future is what inspires me to keep going. I just think about all the things I have got to look forward to and reflect on all of the blessings that are coming out of my journey. This gives me the determination and patience to do what I need to do to get my health back."

Barbara and Amy Grafstrom: the mother/daughter team behind Siamese Dream Design (an awesome example of conscious business), based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Siamese Dream Design empowers local hilltribe women and provides beautiful, wearable art made from their traditional fabrics.
"No haven't wanted to give up. Its our baby, we love what we do and we love helping the tribal women provide a better lifestyle for themselves and their families while preserving their textile traditions.

Our customers inspire me, when they get their shoes or dresses and they write to tell us how excited they are. Today a customer wrote to say "she couldn't wait for sunny weather to dance in her new dress." On a day to day basis my husband always encourages me and my girls, Amy, my partner of course and the younger ones have ideas of new designs they think we should make."
- Barbara Grafstrom
"No, I have never wanted to give up on my dream. I started this business in 2005 with only my own jewelry designs and it's definitely been a long journey to get to where we are today with a full range of products. There is still a long way to go, we have big plans for Siamese Dream Design's future.

My mother, Barbara, my partner definitely is my number one inspiration. She is the one who gave us that extra boost to go from just jewelry to so much more. The wonderful hilltribe women that we work with to create our unique products are definitely a major source of encouragement. Watching their age old textile traditions being passed down from mother to daughter is truly amazing. And of course, our very enthusiastic customers." -

"Never! You only fail if you give up. Resilience is the key.  Don't be scared of making a mistake. Brush of the bad stuff and run with the good and success will follow.

The complete desperation to run my own life drives me on. I decide when I work, play and have family time. My own business allows me the freedom to enjoy all the things that I love. I "live" everyday. I do plan for the future but I also enjoy life now. I now think I would be mentally suffocated in an office."

Kathleen Quillinan: HRH at the Pesto Princess. About 10 years ago, Kathleen Quillinan discovered pesto for herself, and tried her hand at it with the help of a 1970's orange blender from a junk shop. She started selling to friends, small supermarkets and deli's in Cape Town, and now produces a range of pestos and exotic sauces that are available countrywide in South Africa.

"Yes, I've often wanted to give up. Following dreams can fill one's life with extremes: extreme hours, acute cash crunches, severe self-neglect,  copious worries,  colossal doubts, and fears bigger than barn doors. The triumphs are also extreme. The successes can be nothing short of stupendous.  Yet deep down, many of us long for a simple life which is much more balanced,  safe and predictable.

Pesto fans, self-appointed cheerleaders, wise mentors, husbands filled with admiration, financially needy staff with wide eyes, laughter, guaranteed personal growth, loathing of failure, expert consultants, true friends in business, supportive chefs, e-mails crammed with compliments, business coaches, loyal management teams, gratitude, delighted customers , dogged determination, sheer joy, love of creativity, freedom, unemployability, big bills needing paying, desire to do good, the taste for limitless possibility: these are some of the things that keep the Pesto Princess Palace a-pumpin'."
There'll always be challenges that test your commitment and it's not always easy to follow your heart, but if you abandon your hopes and dreams, you disconnect from your authentic self and your own happiness.

When you listen to your heart, follow your dreams and keep going :) you'll be inspired and empowered to Live your Most Joyful Life :)

Rock Your Self-Discipline and Wave your Magic Wand :)

Much as we’d all love it to happen, no-one’s going to wave a magic wand over our lives and make our dreams come true.
The Good News is :) you can wave the wand yourself. You've had it all along.
But you do have to make the effort to pick it up and start waving!

It’s amazing how many excuses we make to ourselves, for not going after what we want.
It’s seems easier to talk ourselves out of doing something, than to put in the effort to actually do it.

You know all the stories :) You’d work out if you had a personal trainer/training buddy. But really, there’s no need :)
You can start by putting one foot in front of the other and taking yourself for a brisk walk.
You can’t save because life is so expensive. Yes, the cost of living is expensive, but you can forego a few unnecessary expenses to put a little money away each month for your dream home/holiday/retirement etc.

You just need to exercise your self-discipline.
“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don't control what you think, you can't control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.”
~
Napoleon Hill
The only way to create what you want, is to discipline your mind to focus only on your desired outcomes, and to take consistent action towards those goals.
“Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”

It’s ok to have a sense of entitlement – of course you deserve to be/have whatever it is that you want.
But it’s not going to land in your lap - you do have to show up consistently to receive it :)
